Mombasa County Governor Hassan Joho has always been criticised over his trips abroad, the critics led by Nyali Mp Hezron Awiti have always argued that the trips are not beneficial to the local residents. Joho has also come out to defend himself over the criticism arguing that his travels can be accounted for.
Joho’s main political rival Suleiman Shahbal has now joined the critics, in an indirect statement targeting the Governor, Shahbal questioned if indeed the “leaders” learn from the cities they visit suggesting they are ” just tourist funded with taxpayers’ money, to learn nothing except enjoying themselves and doing some shopping”
“Our leaders are always travelling around the world. Regularly, you’ll see their photos on Facebook and instagram taken from very beautiful cities across the world – New York, Tokyo, Dubai, Amsterdam, and now in Paris. The common factor for all these cities is that they are very clean and organized, unlike ours. Do they learn anything from the foreign trips? Do they benchmark Mombasa city with other beautiful cities across the World? For example, how does Paris manage solid waste? Do they station trucks in the middle of the city with all the smells, even in front of residential apartments and hotels without any due considerations for environmental hazards?
Or are our leader’s just tourist funded with taxpayers’ money, to learn nothing except enjoying themselves and doing some shopping?” reads the post.
