Staff at the National Broadcaster , Kenya Broadcasting Corporation(KBC) have today downed their tools over what they term as failure to sign and implement a collective bargaining agreement(CBA) between the management and the Communication workers union.
Among the issues addressed in the CBA is the working condition of the workers.
The CBA is said to have been successful negotiated on July 2017 but has since not yet been put to paper. The workers union (COWU) had earlier on June issued a strike notice .
According to a statement from the Managing Director Waithaka Waihenya, the delay in signing the CBA is due to the ongoing consultations with the Salary and Remuneration Commission(SRC).
“It is worth noting that KBC is a state Agency and therefore bound by all laws and rules governing state bodies. the Corporation therefore cannot sign or implement any CBA withouth the approval of SRC. As soon as that is obtained the CBA will be signed forthwith. In the mean time the Corporation is doing everything possible to ensure the transmissions are not affected by the industrial action” reads the statement.
