Haki Africa calls for immediate unconditional release of two Lamu activists arrested for leading protests


Mombasa based Human Rights Organisation Haki Africa has called for the immediate unconditional release of two Lamu based activists Walid Ahmed and Ishaq Abubakara who were arrested by police today morning.

The two were arrested for participating in protests against the controversial Lamu Coal project.

According to Haki Africa Executive officer Hussein Khalid the police are being used in intimidating the residents esp those opposing the project through arrests.

“Haki Africa wishes to inform the police that article 32 of the constitution of Kenya guarantees every Kenyan the right to protest and demonstrate. Further processions and demonstrations are an extension of the people’s freedom of expression and association” said Khalid

He added ” We wish to inform the police that such intimidation will only act to strengthen the movement against the Lamu coal project “.

The two were detained at the Lamu West police station after their arrest.
