The first edition of the Sinema Zetu international film festival awards went down last weekend (Sunday) at the Milimani city complex in Daresalaam.
The festival is a brain child of Azam Tv and seeks to celebrate the film industry and players in East Africa.
Different films from within the region (East Africa) had been shortlisted for the awards including Kenya’s ‘watatu’.
Most of the films selected for the awards were those released from the year 2013 and had to go through vetting from a team of top judges from the industry.
The event brought together all major stakeholders in the entertainment industry with local artists from Tanzania led by Diamond Platnumz attending the event. Dimaond’s baby mama Hamissa Mobetto and former girlfriend Wema Sepetu were present too.
The Tanzanian government was well represented with the assistant Minister for Sports and Culture Juliana Shonza also attending.
Tanzania’s ex president Jakaya Kikwete and Bollywood star Preetika Pree ‘Aliya’ were the main guests of the night.
Kenya’s film industry was also presented by celebrated actor Ken Ambani ‘Baraza’ and actress Caroline Rita.
Among the winners of the night was the Kenyan film ‘Watatu’ which scooped two awards, the best editing feature film and the best cinematography in the feature film category. Apart from the two awards the team behind the film also received 4 million Tanzanian shillings from the organisers.
While receiving the award Ambani emphasized on the need for local film producers to produce good and quality films arguing that is the only way to market the industry.
“I have always insisted on this everywhere i go, do quality film and you will go far, that’s the only secret’ he argued.
Watatu was shot in Mombasa and it follows the story of three men whose lives become intertwined as one of them, Yusuf, a young unemployed Muslim becomes radicalised by an extremist group. Yusuf’s family and friends feel powerless to help him. His uncle and only father figure Salim cannot find the words to counter the extremist ideology and Salim’s old friend Jack, a local policeman, struggles to gain Yusuf’s trust.
