Kilifi county leads in high alcohol consumption amongst the youths with Mombasa still leading in hard drug abuse.
In terms of alcohol consumption Mombasa comes in second position after Kilifi with Taita Taveta at the third position.
According to Nacada Coast regional manager George Karisa, there has been an increase in alcohol consumption in the Coast region and this is due to the availability of traditional and illicit brew and also cheap liquor.
In a bid to combat this, Nacada has launched an operation in all drinking joints including bars , wines and spirits outlets and pubs in the region to make sure that residents take alcohol which is up to standards.
The operation will be carried out by a special multi agency team comprising of officers from Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs), Public Health Department, Kenya Revenue Authority, Anti-Counterfeit Agency ,the county government and Nacada
Karisa Charged “We have launched the operation here in Mombasa but is also ongoing in other parts of the region to make sure that Kenyans take alcohol which meets all the required standards,”.
Addressing Members of the press in Mombasa, Karisa revealed that at least a third of each Coast county consumes alcohol
On his part Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki said that all clubs, bars and pubs located less than 300 metres from schools will be shut down with immediate effect.
